A brief history of Ramsgate

Historically Ramsgate is known for being a collection of fisherman’s cottages clustered around the harbour. By the end of the 17th century shipping trade increased the importance of the port. Four roads were established and remain as the centre crossroads of the town to this date.

The town played a vital role in 1940 during the Second World War, where small ships crossed the channel to Dunkirk recovering troops. The town welcomed an estimated 80,000 people from France.
