About to move home? Time to declutter and get organised

Moving home provides one of the best times to declutter and get organised. While many find it difficult to let possessions go, it's great to start over and ensure you're not going to fill up your new home with the same things you haven't been using for some time. Here are some simple recommendations to help you reduce the amount of items that will just cause you a headache when it comes to unboxing...

Making lists...

Making lists is a great way for you to think straight and get into a routine. Go room by room and write down everything you can think of that you would need when it comes to decorating your new home. Anything that you've missed off the list can't be in the forefront of your mind, so you may not need it. But the beauty of lists is adding and taking things away from them, so if you have missed something you really want to keep then just add it on! Once you've completed your list of everything you will hold on to and you're ready to start boxing things up, you'll find it easier to put things into a 'keep' or 'throw away' pile.

Go through your clothes...

Before packing up your clothes from your wardrobes and drawers that are no doubt bursting at the seams, get your ruthless streak on. If (no doubt when) you find items of clothing you can't even remember the last time you wore, sort them into piles for charity, hand me downs or friends if they've still got life in them. Get rid of anything that looks scruffy or dated, chances are it will just be bunged into a drawer in your new home until you dig it out again by mistake months down the line and wonder why you kept it.

Look at the back of your cupboards...

The chances of regularly using something that has come from the back of your cupboard are slim. Whatever it may be, don't keep it for the sake of it. Apply this approach to every room and you'll soon find yourself cutting back on the amount of things you want to keep. This will provide you with extra space in your new home and make your cupboards manageable.

Get it done in one weekend...

If you can bring yourself to attack your belongings head on, try doing it in as little time as possible. If you have to stretch it out you'll dread having to tackle the next room. Once you get on a run you'll be less likely to be sentimental and will feel much better for finishing the job. This will also free up time for other important tasks you need to complete before moving.

See the opportunity for a fresh start...

Remember back to when you were a first time buyer. You probably wouldn't have moved in with absolutely everything you needed but you survived. So using the fresh start approach could make the experience even more exciting. You'll be able to refresh items in your home over time and reap the rewards of working for new possessions all over again. But be practical about it, so perhaps looking for the latest television or sound-system wouldn't be the most sensible option...
